Serigraph was one of the first printers to participate in Green Tier, a Wisconsin program that encourages organizations to voluntarily commit to limiting their environmental impacts in areas such as waste, runoff and energy use. Serigraph invented the first large-scale biofilter for the printing industry. It removes more than 90% of the petro-chemicals from our inks as the solvent evaporates in the curing process. Microbes in the biofilter eat volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from our emissions. It is an elegant, cost-effective solution to a complex environmental issue. Serigraph dropped its VOC output by 30 tons a year over the last decade. We led the decorating industry in development of UV-sensitive inks, which have no VOC emissions.
Serigraph helps preserve the community through recycling. From office paper and metal container recycling, to high efficiency lighting, Serigraph strives to minimize the company’s effect on the environment by moving toward sustainable development – the concept of using as few natural resources as possible to build and deliver product. Serigraph was one of the first companies to receive a Green Tier 2 contract from Wisconsin. This contract is based on ISO 14001 certification as a means of proactively preventing environmental waste.

Serigraph goes beyond standard regulations for pollution reduction and prevention. Highlights to our environmental initiatives include:
- West Bend operations and SJS India have achieved ISO14001, the highest standard for environmental management systems.
- Serigraph was one of the first companies to write a Green Tier contract with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
- Company executives and managers have taken top leadership positions in the Wisconsin Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, Partners for Clean Air, and 1000 Friends of Wisconsin.
- 85% of the solid wastes from the company are recycled.
- Serigraph’s campus features a prairie of natural plants and grasses. It includes a sediment retention pond to cleanse flows into the Milwaukee River and walking paths. The campus absorbs 30 tons of CO2 per year.
- Serigraph has a dedicated sustainability group that researches environmentally friendly materials and make it a practice to recommend these solutions to our customers.
- Winner of Partners for Clean Air Award from Wisconsin DNR, Business Friend of the Environment Award from Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce and a Gold Medal for American Printer Environmental Excellence Award
- Implemented innovative heat exchangers to conserve 450,000 kilowatts per year.
- A lean project reduced the company’s water usage by 4.5 million gallons, or 65% of previous usage.
- Installed florescent bulbs in place of metal halide, saving 1,297,192 kwh annually.
